In today’s digital world, children spend more time in front of screens than ever before. While technology offers many opportunities for learning and communication, it has also reduced the amount of time children spend being physically active and interacting face-to-face with others.

This is why traditional sports are becoming increasingly important.

Traditional sports are much more than games passed down from generation to generation. They are part of a country’s identity, history, and culture. They tell stories about how communities lived, celebrated, and worked together long before modern sports became popular.

Bringing traditional sports together

The UniTos – United through Sport project brings together four traditional sports from Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia. Each of these sports reflects the unique heritage of its country while sharing common values that unite people across borders.

Traditional sports are also an excellent way to encourage physical activity among children. Unlike many competitive sports, they often focus on participation, cooperation, and enjoyment rather than winning at all costs. This creates a welcoming environment where every child can feel included.

For children with disabilities, adapted traditional sports provide opportunities to participate alongside their peers. They promote equality, confidence, and mutual respect while demonstrating that sport should be accessible to everyone. Traditional sports also encourage communication between generations. Grandparents often remember playing these games in their youth and can share their experiences with younger family members. In this way, sport becomes a bridge between the past and the future.

The UniTos project aims not only to preserve these traditions but also to give them new life by adapting them for inclusive participation. Through educational materials, training sessions, and international sports camps, children will discover that traditions can evolve while keeping their cultural value. The UniTos project aims not only to preserve these traditions but also to give them new life by adapting them for inclusive participation.
