BRAVO BiH

Traditional wrestling (Narodno hrvanje) is among Serbia’s oldest sporting traditions, dating back centuries to rural communities where wrestling competitions formed part of local festivals, religious celebrations, and community gatherings.

Originally, wrestling was not only a test of physical strength but also of honour, discipline, and character.

Competitions were often held during village celebrations, where participants competed according to long-established customs emphasizing respect for opponents and fair competition.

🇷🇸 Traditional Wrestling (Narodno hrvanje) – Serbia

Throughout history, Serbian wrestling has been influenced by various cultural traditions across the Balkans while preserving its own distinctive techniques and rules. Many regions continue to organize traditional wrestling tournaments as part of folklore festivals and cultural events, helping pass these customs on to younger generations.

Unlike many modern combat sports, traditional wrestling places great importance on respect, self-control, and sportsmanship. Victory is achieved through skill, balance, and technique rather than brute force alone.

As part of the UniTos – United through Sport project, traditional wrestling is presented in an adapted and inclusive format that allows young participants to experience its cultural value in a safe and educational environment. By learning about Serbia’s sporting heritage, participants also discover the shared traditions that connect communities across the Western Balkans.
