Bacanje kamena s ramena (stone throwing from the shoulder) is one of the oldest traditional athletic disciplines in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The sport has its origins in rural communities, where physical strength was essential for everyday agricultural life.
Historically, local festivals, village celebrations, and traditional fairs often included competitions in strength-based disciplines, with stone throwing becoming one of the most popular events.

Young men would compete to demonstrate their power, endurance, and technique, earning respect within their communities.
Over time, the discipline became an important element of traditional Highland Games (Narodne igre) that are still organized in many parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina today. Although modern equipment has replaced natural stones in official competitions, the sport continues to preserve the country’s cultural identity and sporting heritage.
Stone throwing requires much more than strength. Proper technique, balance, coordination, and concentration all play a crucial role in achieving successful results.
Within the UniTos project, this historic discipline is adapted to ensure that children and young people with different abilities can safely participate. By introducing participants from across the Western Balkans to this unique tradition, the project helps preserve Bosnian cultural heritage while promoting inclusion, mutual respect, and intercultural learning.
