Few sports are as closely connected to a country’s identity as skiing is to Slovenia. Thanks to its Alpine landscape and snowy winters, skiing has been part of Slovenian life for centuries.
Historical records suggest that early forms of skiing were already practiced in the Slovenian mountains several hundred years ago, initially as a practical means of transportation during winter.
Over time, skiing evolved into a recreational activity and eventually into one of Slovenia’s most successful competitive sports.
Slovenia has produced some of the world’s most celebrated alpine skiers and ski jumpers, making winter sports an important source of national pride. Events such as the Alpine Ski World Cup races in Kranjska Gora and the famous Planica Ski Flying competition attract visitors from across Europe every year.
Beyond elite competition, skiing remains an essential part of Slovenian culture. Schools regularly organize ski courses, introducing children to the sport from an early age and encouraging healthy, active lifestyles.
In the UniTos project, skiing symbolizes perseverance, courage, and cooperation. Adapted skiing activities demonstrate that winter sports can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of physical ability. By making skiing inclusive, the project promotes equal participation while celebrating one of Slovenia’s strongest sporting traditions.
