Boćanje, internationally known as bocce, is one of Croatia’s oldest and most cherished traditional sports.
Its roots date back thousands of years to ancient civilizations around the Mediterranean, where games involving throwing stone balls toward a target were enjoyed by the Greeks and Romans.
As Roman influence spread across the Adriatic coast, the game became deeply embedded in Croatian culture, particularly in the regions of Istria, Kvarner, Dalmatia, and the Croatian islands.
For centuries, boćanje has been more than just a sport. It has served as a social gathering where families, neighbours, and friends come together in village squares and local bocce courts to spend time together, celebrate traditions, and strengthen community bonds.
Today, Croatia has a well-developed bocce tradition with numerous clubs, national competitions, and international achievements. The sport is practiced recreationally by people of all ages while also enjoying professional recognition.
Within the UniTos – United through Sport project, bocce represents accessibility and inclusion.
Because the game relies on precision, strategy, and teamwork rather than physical strength, it can easily be adapted for participants with different abilities. Through bocce, young people learn patience, cooperation, fair play, and respect while discovering an important part of Croatia’s cultural heritage.
