Outdoor Ventures: Learning Entrepreneurship Beyond the Classroom
Entrepreneurship is no longer limited to classrooms, business plans, or boardrooms. Today, it is increasingly about adaptability, creativity, teamwork, and resilience, skills that are best developed through experience. In cooperation with “Fondacija Poduzetnika u BiH” the Outdoor Ventures youth exchange demonstrated exactly that by combining outdoor learning with entrepreneurial education in a powerful and innovative way.
The project was implemented in Lithuania and brought together young people from Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Georgia, and Lithuania. Its core aim was to explore how nature-based, experiential learning methods can support the development of entrepreneurial mindsets among young people, while also providing youth workers with practical tools they can transfer to their local contexts.
Learning Entrepreneurship in Nature
Outdoor learning goes far beyond physical activity. It is a holistic educational approach that places young people in real-life situations where they must cooperate, solve problems, reflect on their actions, and adapt to changing conditions.
By moving learning outside, participants become more engaged, use their senses more actively, and develop stronger social connections. Within Outdoor Ventures, nature became a living classroom, a space where creativity flowed more freely, challenges turned into opportunities, and teamwork developed organically. These conditions mirror the reality of entrepreneurship, where uncertainty, collaboration, and innovation are constant.
From Ideas to Action: A Structured Learning Journey
The Outdoor Ventures programme followed a carefully designed learning flow spread across several thematic days. Participants began by exploring the concept of outdoor entrepreneurship, reflecting on creativity, risk-taking, and opportunity recognition. As the programme progressed, they engaged in creative exercises inspired by natural surroundings, discovering how observation and imagination can lead to innovative ideas.
Leadership and teamwork were strengthened through outdoor challenges that required trust, empathy, and communication. Later, participants moved from ideas to practice by developing simple prototypes, testing them, and refining their concepts through feedback. The programme concluded with pitching sessions and an outdoor showcase, where teams presented their projects, shared lessons learned, and reflected on their personal growth.
Throughout this journey, participants learned that failure is not an endpoint, but a natural and valuable part of the entrepreneurial process.
Practical Tools for Youth Workers
One of the key outcomes of Outdoor Ventures is its strong transferability. The project produced a guidebook that offers concrete methods youth workers and educators can easily adapt, such as:
- World Café in Nature, encouraging discussion and collective problem-solving outdoors
- Resource Challenges, where teams work with limited materials to foster creativity and resourcefulness
- Entrepreneurial Scavenger Hunts, simulating the stages of building a start-up
- Pitch in the Park, combining communication skills with creative presentation
- Outdoor Reflection Circles, transforming experience into meaningful learning
These tools connect physical, emotional, and cognitive learning, making entrepreneurship tangible, engaging, and memorable.
Impact and Key Lessons
Participants reported increased self-confidence, stronger leadership skills, improved communication, and a clearer understanding of how to turn ideas into action. The project highlighted several key lessons:
- Nature is an ideal environment for creative thinking and risk-taking
- Collaboration thrives when trust and shared goals are present
- Learning by doing has a deeper impact than theory alone
- Reflection is essential for transforming experience into knowledge
An Invitation to Take Learning Outside
Outdoor Ventures proved that entrepreneurship education does not have to start indoors. It can begin under the open sky, beside a river, or in the middle of a forest. By combining outdoor experiential learning with entrepreneurial education, young people do not only gain practical skills, they discover themselves as changemakers, problem solvers, and creative thinkers.
This project and its guidebook stand as both a reflection of that journey and an invitation to others: take your learning outside, and let nature inspire your next venture
