Sport plays a very important role in the mental and physical development of every individual, and it is especially important for children as it supports healthier growth and learning. Through sports, children not only improve their physical abilities but also build self-confidence, learn teamwork, and develop social skills. For children with developmental disabilities, participation in sports is even more meaningful. Inclusion is one of the basic rights of every child, and enabling equal access to sports is important not only for each child’s personal progress but also for the growth of a supportive and inclusive community. When children with disabilities are given the opportunity to take part in physical activities, they feel valued, connected, and empowered.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are many organizations and clubs that work with great dedication to support inclusion, expand sports activities, and provide a caring and adaptive approach for children with developmental difficulties. In addition to swimming, there is a growing list of other sports that are open to children with special needs—such as athletics, skiing, basketball, volleyball, parabadminton, and more.
One major example of the country’s effort to raise awareness and offer structured opportunities is the Special Olympics Bosnia and Herzegovina (SOBiH). This organization has been active since 1997 and provides regular training and competitions in sports like athletics, swimming, basketball, football, table tennis, and skiing. Their programs are designed specifically for children and youth with intellectual disabilities and are carried out in cooperation with more than 70 organizations and institutions across the country.
SOBiH not only promotes sports participation but also encourages inclusion, acceptance, and understanding. It helps athletes build friendships, gain recognition, and feel like valued members of society. Over the years, many participants from BiH have taken part in international Special Olympics events, proudly representing their country and showing what is possible when everyone is given a fair chance.
In our previous articles, we talked about the inclusion of children with developmental difficulties in sports such as swimming and athletics, within the framework of the Train4Family project. The main goal of this project is to empower children with developmental challenges by encouraging their participation in sports together with their families, while also promoting healthy eating habits. It focuses on strengthening both physical and emotional well-being through family-based activities.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the inclusion of children with disabilities in sports is highly important and holds great value for society. Such initiatives help break down social barriers and raise awareness about the abilities of every child. By creating more inclusive spaces, clubs and organizations ensures no child is left behind in the journey toward health, happiness, and equal opportunities.
