SUMMARY

Nature protection is high on the Agenda of the European Union and has progressed from first international initiatives in the 1970s through several steps to a now firmly codified EU agenda under Natura 2000, which covers over 30,000 sites. Environmental protection in the EU and consists of over 500 directives and regulations covering all fields of pollution. Facing climate change and an enormous decline of species as well as failure to preserve habitats, the decade from 2010 until 2020 was dedicated to biodiversity.

A lot of things have improved. Most are unnoticed by a wider public. Its volumes are not nearly enough. Active destruction of nature in the EU is ongoing, although preserving nature is a key in stopping climate change.

„Young Environmentalists“ is an interactive youth exchange on ecology, environmental protection, and biodiversity. In two youth exchanges rooted in this matter, participants from six countries are exploring a way to become “environmentalists”.

The project answers to the desire of young people to get involved in the field of environmental protection inspired by the examples of Fridays for Future, Greenpeace, and movements like the Extinction Rebellion. The methodology of this exchange is very playful, hands-on in nature and in urban surroundings, interactive, and full of non-formal methods.

They are designed to intensify our participants’ empathy for nature, science, activism, and the urge for change at the same time. The structure of the project moves the participants from learning about nature to the level where they analyze the development of environmental protection and become active themselves.

This project shall empower them to go home and make informed choices on how they get involved in environmental projects themselves.

The project starts out in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country outside the EU, boasts untouched wildlife, beautiful landscapes, and diverse habitats and biotopes with rich biocenosis. Here we can introduce our participants to many aspects of nature, that do not exist in this form in Germany anymore. Its citizens are still living in a larger number in contact with their rural surroundings. In some villages, agriculture still bases on self-sufficiency, very much in a pre-EU accession stage.

Travel cost for participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina – 275 EUR

Your task is to arrive in Bremen, that is at Central Train Station. From Bremen, you can take a train or bus to Osterholz-Scharmbeck. First, there is a direct Bus from Bremen Central Bus Station right in front of the Train Station. It has the number 660 in direction Hagen. It leaves once per two hours and drives for about 40 minutes. The first bus is workdays at 6:45 AM and the last leaves from the Bremen Main Station at 7 pm. After that, there is only the train, which leaves every hour or two until early morning.

Look for this further down. You get out at the the bus station OHZ Garlstedt Logistikschule der Bundeswehr (Logistics School of the German Army). From there you go through a small forest lane and then along an asphalted road along the fields to the Street Hinterm Horn 5. The venue is 0,75km away.

In case you arrive later than 19:00h you should go by train from Bremen to OsterholzScharmbeck station. Nevertheless, the venue is 8-10 km, which is about 2 hours walk, away from this train station, depending on which way you walk. Therefore you should announce and agree to your arrival with us. Call us and we will see, how to pick you up.

ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD

The accommodation is 100% covered by Erasmus+ Programme.

We are going to stay in the KulturHaus, Hinterm Horn 5, in Garlstedt in the municipality of Osterholz-Scharmbek, in the bundesland Niedersachsen, Germany. It is a simple but beautiful accommodation something like a youth hostel in the countryside. The venue where we are accommodated is in the middle of a small village some 30 kilometers outside of Bremen.

– The rooms are going to be 2-5 beds per room. We will mix the nationalities, not the genders.

– We will be the only group in the house. We will do workshops, make parties, make national evenings and eat together and so on. We will make the rules together and will respect the rules that we make.

– There are showers in 7 of the rooms, the rest have them, and also bathrooms outside of the rooms.

We have our own cooking and logistics team that would prepare meals for us and healthy food will be done for the people with food preferences – vegetarians, no pork, halal, non-gluten, etc.

What do you need in concern to the venue?

Shoes for inside. As it is a really large house, which needs to be kept clean, everyone would need an extra pair of shoes for inside the house (slippers or clean shoes, which you will not wear outside).

Bring your own towel. The same goes for hair driers, shampoo, and so on. There will be bed sheets provided. If you forgot things we can buy them for you on-demand in nearby stores or you purchase them.
